Ignition Grants for Sustainable Education Transformation (IGSET)

Kummer Institute’s IGSET (Ignition Grants for Sustainable Education Transformation): AI Curriculum Innovation Seed Grants Administered by Online Learning & Educational Innovation (OLEI) is requesting proposals for a new IGSET grant based on:

Missouri S&T is committed to preparing every graduate to use artificial intelligence responsibly, ethically, and effectively while empowering faculty to thoughtfully integrate AI into teaching, assessment, curriculum design, and educational innovation. Our goal is not simply to teach students about AI, but to harness its potential to create richer learning experiences, deepen disciplinary expertise, improve educational outcomes, and better prepare graduates for an AI enabled workforce. The IGSET AI Curriculum Innovation Seed Grant Program supports faculty who are leading this transformation. 

Missouri S&T is committed to preparing every graduate to use artificial intelligence responsibly, 
ethically, and effectively while empowering faculty to thoughtfully integrate AI into teaching, 
assessment, curriculum design, and educational innovation. Our goal is not simply to teach 
students about AI, but to harness its potential to create richer learning experiences, deepen 
disciplinary expertise, improve educational outcomes, and better prepare graduates for an AI
enabled workforce. The IGSET AI Curriculum Innovation Seed Grant Program supports faculty 
who are leading this transformation. 
The IGSET program provides faculty with funding to develop educational innovations that create 
sustainable, transformative improvements in teaching and learning. Projects may focus on 
undergraduate or graduate education and may be implemented in face-to-face, hybrid, or online 
asynchronous learning environments. Faculty teams and individual instructors from any 
academic discipline are encouraged to propose innovative approaches that thoughtfully integrate 
artificial intelligence into teaching, learning, assessment, or curriculum design. 
Successful proposals will demonstrate how AI enhances rather than replaces student learning, 
critical thinking, creativity, and disciplinary expertise. 
The program encourages experimentation, evidence-based innovation, and the development of 
scalable models that advance Missouri S&T's mission as a leading technological university while 
promoting critical thinking, disciplinary expertise, and responsible AI use. 
A total of $200,000 is available for this round of funding. All work must be completed by June 
30, 2027, unless other arrangements are made.  
The program welcomes proposals from all academic disciplines and instructional modalities. 
Whether the goal is to redesign a face-to-face laboratory course, develop AI-enhanced online 
learning experiences, reimagine assessment practices, or transform an entire academic program, 
the emphasis is on improving student learning through thoughtful and responsible use of AI. 
For purposes of this program, artificial intelligence includes generative AI, predictive AI, 
intelligent tutoring systems, machine learning applications, AI-assisted assessment, discipline
specific AI tools, and other emerging technologies that support teaching, learning, or curriculum 
innovation. 
Projects may focus on: 
• AI-enhanced teaching and learning  
• AI literacy and workforce preparation  
• Assessment redesign in the age of AI  
• Human-AI collaboration  
• Ethical and responsible AI use  
• AI in disciplinary practice  
• AI-supported experiential learning  
• Program-level curricular transformation  
The goal is not simply to add AI tools to courses, but to improve student learning, engagement, 
and career readiness through intentional instructional design. The program emphasizes 
innovation, assessment, and dissemination of effective practices. 

Category 1: Planning Grants (up to $5,000)

Supports departments or faculty groups exploring AI-related curricular opportunities. 
Examples: 

Faculty learning communities  
Curriculum mapping activities  
Workshops and retreats  
External speakers  
Development of implementation plans

Deliverable: 
Strategic plan or proposal for future implementation 

Category 2: Course Innovation Grants (up to $12,000) 
Supports the design of new courses or the redesign of existing courses. 
Examples: 

New AI-enabled assignments  
Alternative assessment models  
AI literacy modules  
Discipline-specific AI applications  
Human-AI collaboration projects  
Creation of reusable instructional materials  

Deliverables: 

Revised course materials  
Assessment plan  
Faculty showcase presentation  

Category 3: Curriculum Transformation Grants (up to $25,000) 
Supports coordinated redesign across multiple courses or an entire program. 
Priority may be given to projects demonstrating one or more of the following: 

Potential for measurable impact on student learning 
Gateway STEM courses  
General education courses  
Graduate workforce preparation  
Interdisciplinary partnerships  

Deliverables: 

Shared curricular framework  
Implementation across multiple courses  
Assessment report  
Campus dissemination event 

• All full-time faculty  
• Faculty teams  
• Academic departments  
• Interdisciplinary faculty groups 


Preference may be given to: 
• Cross-department collaborations  
• High-enrollment courses  
• Projects affecting multiple programs  
• Proposals aligned with S&T strategic priorities  

Faculty development including summer salary or extra compensation (if eligible)* and 
course releases (with workload manager approval) 
• Student assistant support 
• Instructional design including multimedia development and learning asset creation 
• Professional development including conferences, workshops, and dissemination events 
• Educational technology including software licenses and learning analytics support 


*Note: Compensation and benefits must be included in the final submission. In FY27, summer 
salary benefit rate is 23.30%, and extra compensation benefit rate is 7.65%

    Award recipients receive: 
    • Instructional design consultation to support course and curriculum innovation in any 
    instructional modality. 
    • Faculty development support  
    • Access to AI teaching resources  
    • Participation in an AI Faculty Learning Community  
    • Opportunities to present outcomes at a Spring 2027 AI Teaching Showcase  
    • Consultation on assessment and evaluation of AI-enhanced learning

    Recipients will contribute to Missouri S&T's broader AI educational strategy by: 
    • Creating models that can be adopted by other faculty  
    • Developing evidence-based teaching practices  
    • Preparing graduates to use AI responsibly, ethically, and effectively within their 
    professions. 
    • Developing transferable AI competencies valued across disciplines and industries. 
    • Sharing results through campus presentations, publications, or conferences 

    Recipients agree to: 
    • Participate in a mid-year progress meeting.  
    • Submit a final report describing project outcomes and assessment findings.  
    • Present results at the Spring 2027 AI Teaching Showcase. 

    Proposals should include the following materials: 
    1. Project Narrative (maximum 5 pages) 
    The narrative should address: 
    • Project Overview – Brief description of the proposed project and its goals.  
    • Educational Challenge or Opportunity – The instructional need, curricular opportunity, or 
    problem the project will address.  
    • Proposed AI Innovation – How artificial intelligence will be integrated into teaching, 
    learning, assessment, or curriculum, and why this approach is appropriate.  
    • Impact on Student Learning – Expected benefits for student learning, engagement, AI 
    literacy, workforce preparation, or other educational outcomes.  
    • Assessment and Evaluation Plan – How project success and student learning outcomes 
    will be measured.  
    • Project Timeline – Major milestones and anticipated completion dates.  
    • Sustainability and Dissemination – Plans for sustaining the innovation beyond the grant 
    period and sharing outcomes with the campus community.  
    2. Budget and Budget Justification 
    Provide an itemized budget with a brief justification for all requested expenses. If requesting 
    faculty compensation, include the applicable fringe benefit rates. 
    3. Letter of Support 
    Include a letter of support from the Department Chair or Dean that: 
    • Confirms support for the proposed project.  
    • Describes how the project aligns with departmental or college priorities.  
    • Identifies any departmental commitments (e.g., course release, workload adjustments, or 
    other support), if applicable.  
    • Affirms the department's commitment to successful implementation and long-term 
    sustainability of the project. 

    Each proposal will be evaluated by a committee of institutional stakeholders using the following 
    weighted criteria: 
    • Strategic Alignment and Innovation (25%) 
    o Alignment with Missouri S&T's strategic priorities for educational innovation and 
    AI integration.  
    o Demonstrates a thoughtful and innovative approach to incorporating AI into 
    teaching, learning, assessment, or curriculum.  
    o Potential to serve as a model for future AI-enabled educational practices across 
    the university.  
    • Impact on Student Learning (25%) 
    o Clear potential to improve student learning, engagement, critical thinking, AI 
    literacy, and workforce readiness.  
    o Supports responsible and ethical AI use within the discipline.  
    o Demonstrates meaningful educational innovation rather than simply incorporating 
    AI technologies. 
    • Quality of Project Design (20%) 
    o Clearly defined goals, deliverables, and expected outcomes.  
    o Strong instructional design and appropriate integration of AI within the 
    curriculum.  
    o Well-developed assessment plan for evaluating project effectiveness and student 
    learning.  
    • Feasibility and Sustainability (15%) 
    o Realistic implementation timeline and achievable project milestones.  
    o Appropriate budget and effective use of requested funds.  
    o Potential for sustained impact beyond the grant period, including adoption by 
    additional courses, faculty, or programs.  
    • Faculty Expertise and Collaboration (10%) 
    o Relevant disciplinary expertise and commitment to the proposed project.  
    o Evidence of collaboration among faculty, departments, or campus partners, as 
    appropriate.  
    o Willingness to engage with OLEI instructional designers and participate in project 
    assessment and dissemination activities, as appropriate  
    • Departmental and College Support (5%) 
    o Strength and specificity of the Department Chair's or Dean's letter of support.  
    o Evidence that the proposed project aligns with departmental, college, or university 
    priorities.  
    o Commitment to supporting successful implementation and long-term 
    sustainability of the project.  

    Funds will be distributed following receipt of all required approvals. The milestones and 
    schedule for fund distribution will be outlined in the award letter and subsequent budget 
    meeting. 
    • Any significant changes in project scope or budget require prior approval from OLEI.  
    • Projects should acknowledge support from the Kummer Institute IGSET program in 
    publications and presentations resulting from the award. 

    Priority deadline for proposals is September 1, 2026.  Proposals received after the priority 
    deadline will be reviewed on a rolling basis as funding remains available.
