An academic escape room is an instructional strategy that transforms course content into a sequence of interconnected challenges. Students demonstrate their understanding by solving problems, analyzing information, and applying concepts to unlock the next stage of the activity. Escape rooms can be used to introduce new material, reinforce learning, review for exams, or assess student understanding while promoting communication, teamwork, and engagement.

Key Characteristics:

  • Aligned with learning outcomes
  • Requires critical thinking and problem-solving
  • Encourages collaboration and communication
  • Provides immediate feedback through puzzle progression
  • Can be physical, digital, or hybrid
  • Makes learning interactive and memorable

Escape Rooms can be physical, digital, or a combination of both.

What makes a good Escape Room?

  • It has a plan and a defined learning goal(s)
  • It tells a story!
  • Visuals: images, videos, audio
  • Pilot and test
  • Encourage students to search for information
