Professor of French and Intercultural Studies
Missouri S&T
I was raised between France, Germany, and North Africa, and spent more than half of my life in the US. I often taught and researched across traditional academic silos and disciplines, because reality is not organized along neat academic fields. I have a personal and professional interest in intercultural competence (IC) and in cognitive and neuro-psychology, evolutionary psychology, and transpersonal psychology. I am fascinated by the fundamental questions: self-knowledge, knowledge of reality, and epistemological questions--how do we know, how do we know that we know, and how do we differentiate between beliefs and truth? This knowledge and skills are vital for self and society, especially in our age of faux news, toxic lies, and cognitive, emotional, and ethical confusion. Indeed, emotional and social intelligence are key to our students' learning, personal and social development.

She agrees with poet Naomi Shihab Nye who says, “Teaching and writing are separate, but serve/feed one another in so many ways. It is an honor to be with others in the spirit of writing and encouragement.” She is the recipient of two Faculty Achievement Awards, and she has been nominated for a We Love Your Class award four times.
