Honorlock

Honorlock is the current UM-System approved remote proctoring solution. Honorlock combines the power of live proctoring with AI to protect exam integrity and improve the testing experience.

It works with Canvas' existing Quizzes, including all of your settings for each exam, such as Moderated Quizzes and differentiated Quizzes for individuals or groups of students.

Here is how it works:

  1. You create your Quiz as normal inside of Canvas, including all of the parameters for that Quiz such as duration, due dates, and availability.
  2. You go into Honorlock and Enable Honorlock for that Quiz.
    1. Within Honorlock you will set the testing parameters such as whether or not students can use multiple screens or open additional tabs/browsers. You all specify and instructions about their testing environment, such as whether or not they can use scratch paper.
  3. Students will go to Honorlock in Canvas and start their exam. They will go through an "onboarding process" that will verify the student's identity and, if necessary, perform a 360-room-scan to show their current testing environment.
  4. Students complete the exam.
    1. They can contact Honorlock for technical support through the chat window.
    2. All of this communication is logged during the exam.
    3. The session is recorded and any issues will be flagged for review.
  5. Instructors can review any or all sessions from start to finish, or focus only on those sessions that indicate a high probability of academic dishonesty MAY have occurred.

PRO TIP: To help students become acclimated to the Honorlock testing experience, instructors can easily add a "Practice Test" to their course. This simple test just gives students practice in onboarding into an exam and lets them experience the testing environment. They can do this as many times as they like.

At the moment, the costs are being borne by the University of Missouri-System under the institutional license.

There is no direct cost for students.

Honorlock has a convenient guide on how to create a Practice Exam in Canvas.

NOTE: Practice exams will NOT generate a reviewable session. It's only there so that your students can go through the Honorlock exam experience prior to taking the REAL exam.

IMPORTANT! Honorlock requires that students use the Chrome web browser and install the Honorlock Chrome extension

This extension is NOT required when setting up an Honorlock exam in Canvas. It's only required when taking an exam.

Minimum System Requirements

From time to time, students may encounter technical difficulties in their exam. Perhaps their webcam stops working. Or some other issue doesn't seem to allow them to engage with their exam.

In such cases, they can always interact with Honorlock through their chat window, which available 24/7. In some cases, a live proctor may intervene when the AI system notices that the student is attempting to circumvent the exam procedures, like trying to open a new window repeatedly.

Honorlock will NOT provide students with answers during an exam! They will only provide technical assistance or intervene to help the student get back on track with their assigned task. All interactions are logged and will become part of the recorded session for later review by the instructor.
