Wired for Connection: Promoting Student and Faculty Well-being and Success

As social beings, we have a deep and fundamental need to be part of the group. When we feel like we belong, we are willing and able to  cognitively engage, take intellectual risks, and learn more deeply and effectively. We’ll explore how promoting connections and belonging with and among our students fosters increased academic achievement, engagement, and persistence, all of which lead to better and more equitable learning outcomes in all class modalities. As we identify evidence-based practical strategies to promote student well-being and success, we’ll discover how these techniques support our own well-being and success, too.

Pre-Conference Workshop

Building Rapport and Fostering Trust to Boost Engagement and Learning

In this interactive workshop, we will consider the literature on how building rapport and fostering trust promotes equitable and inclusive learning environments and supports holistic student success. In the past two years we’ve seen, both personally and professionally, the importance of social connections to enhance academic and whole-person success. Related to the broad themes of the keynote address, this session will dive into the twin aspects of rapport- and trust-building to empower students to learn and achieve. You’ll leave with do-able tips and tricks to try next week or next semester, ideas to enliven and invigorate your class regardless of subject matter or modality.
