Students create a list of pros and cons of an issue of concern. This activity allows students to go beyond their first reactions, to search for at least two sides to the issue in question, and to weight the value of competing claims.

RETURN TO INDEX

Even a cursory reading of students’ lists of pros and cons provides important information on the depth and breadth of their analyses and their capacity for objectivity. Sort them into piles based on trends you see and select some illustrative examples to discuss with the class.

Have students work individually or in pairs to create a pros-and-cons chart or a paraphrased explanation for a specific audience using Microsoft Whiteboard, Padlet, or Google Docs/Slides. Then, debrief or have students post summaries on collaborative boards to
share their work and insights.
