Students begin in “expert groups.” They are experts because all members of that group have been assigned to read the same reading (or examine the same information). This reading is different for each expert group. Expert groups discuss the reading and write down key points/answers to given questions. Next, students move to “learner groups,” composed of at least one expert from every expert
group. Students teach one another about their reading and their answers to given questions.

RETURN TO INDEX

Have students read their expert text before class. Carefully think about how students will know which learner group to move to when it is time for them to teach each other.

Create two sets of breakout rooms for “Expert” and “Learner” groups. Students begin meeting with their “Expert” breakout groups to type up key points, then move to Learner groups. Provide shared Google Docs/Slides for tracking room designation, discussions and information sharing.
