Concept maps are visual representations of relationships between concepts or ideas. Ask students or groups of students to produce a simple, graphic representation or illustration of key concepts. Concept maps can be created with pen and paper, whiteboards, using post-its or using mind/concept mapping software. Concept maps allow students to identify connections that may not otherwise be obvious and prompt them to construct their own knowledge.

To scaffold, start students off with simpler or familiar concepts and/or give students word banks to build a concept map together.

This activity can also be a longer term project. Start small and build map throughout several class periods or even over the semester.

Have students create and share maps on Google Slides, individually or in breakout groups. For larger or more complex concept maps, consider free digital tools (like Lucidchart, Draw.Io, or Miro).
