Give students a grid of two or three main concepts or categories and a list of related subordinate items that belong to one or another of those categories. Within a set time, students sort items into those categories and explain their reasoning. Offer feedback to refine their understanding.

Clearly define categories and provide examples to guide students. If desired, add cross-cutting themes across the superordinate categories to elevate the cognitive complexity of the exercise.
